The Brook Trout of Trout Brook, Dover, MA

The Fin, Fur and Feather Club of Millis will be hosting a presentation by the Native Fish Coalition about their ongoing efforts in confirming and conserving the native brook trout population of Trout Brook in Dover, MA. This small brook and tributary stream of the Charles River has been fished by many of our members and many be might be unaware of its recent condition and the lack of native brook trout in its waters. If you are interested in attending this event you must register using the link below.

Presentation Details:

The Brook Trout of Trout Brook

In 2023, the Massachusetts chapter of Native Fish Coalition (NFC) initiated a project to assess the condition of Trout Brook in Dover. Trout Brook is a coldwater ecosystem with a rare-to-the-area self-sustaining population of native brook trout. The impetus behind the project was a 2021 report from MassWildlife where electro-fishing had failed to confirm the presence of wild brook trout for the first time since the 1960’s. After 2 seasons of extensive analysis, NFC concluded that brook trout are remnant at best and possibly extirpated in Trout Brook. Equally concerning is that the stream is no longer functioning as a coldwater system.

NFC will be presenting their findings along with recommendations in regard to improving the situation and ideally restoring wild native brook trout to Brook Trout and other parts of the Charles River.

February Members Meeting

This months meeting will take place this Thursday (20th February). There will be a short club meeting to address board member elections and the spring stocking plans then there will be a presentation by Rob Wallace, the writer of local crime novel "Machine Guns & Typewriters". See the February blog post for a full write up about this fascinating and true crime caper. Dinner will be served at 6:30pm and the meeting will start at 7:00pm.

Members are welcome to invite a guest to this meeting but please RSVP to Jeff B on the email below if you plan to do so. This will help the club estimate food and space requirements.

Ice Fishing - Sunday 23rd February

Ice fishing the pond was a big hit so the Board of Directors have agreed to a second ice fishing afternoon on Sunday 23rd February from 12pm until dusk. This will be a less formal event so members are asked to bring their own jigging rods and bait (small shiners or night crawlers will work best). Phil B and Johnny S will be there to drill holes. We ask that the first members to arrive light a fire in the clubhouse wood stove and also start the outside fire pit using the wood from the left end of the wood pile. There is charcoal in the clubhouse if anyone feels like using the weber grill.

Single barbless hooks only and please release any trout with minimal handling.

Ice conditions and weather will be assessed on Friday 21st February.
