November Turkey Raffle/Auction

The annual NSC Turkey Raffle/Auction takes place this week (Thursday 20th November). This is always a fun night and it is a major fundraiser for our club. Some of the funds raised this year will go towards a Thanksgiving stocking of brook trout that will provide us with great fishing through the winter and spring.
MC Paul DeFilippo will take charge of raffle proceedings at 7:00pm and this years prizes include the usual donated fishing memorabilia as well as some amazing items. We have fly lines, fly selections, fly boxes, fly fishing tools, fly and spinning reels, wine, clothing, gift vouchers for local business and a lot more.
There is also a Silent Auction part to this event and the auction items and bidding slips will be set up in the clubhouse from Tuesday 18th November. Members who can not attend can email their bid using the club email address (needhamtroutpond@gmail.com). Please include the name of the item and your bid in the email. Email bids have to be received by 12pm on the day of the auction. In-person bids can be made at the event up to 8pm.

Fishing Report
Some big rainbow trout have been caught this week with members having success out front of the clubhouse and also out back along the shore. Certain times of day seem to be better than others with fish clearly swirling and feeding for short periods then going quiet. Streamers and wet flies are working but dry flies and small nymphs under indictors are also taking fish when they are visibly feeding.
Club Rules
Please remember to crush the barbs on your hooks if you are not using barbless flies. Barbless or crushed hooks should be easy to remove from caught fish, often coming free in the net after landing.
Please remember to land trout with a net to avoid handling the fish. If you must take a photograph do so with the fish in the net and close to or in the water. If the fish is deep hooked it often better for the fish to cut the leader close to the mouth as opposed to using forceps to try and free the fly and damage the trout's mouth and gills.

The club discourages the use of anything other than tradition flies when fishing the pond. The Board of Directors are working towards clearly defining what is meant by "traditional fly" and will be updating the club rules so the use of soft plastics lures like trout magnets, plastic eggs and crappie jigs will be prohibited. These fishing methods when fished under indicators can be harmful to the trout when deep hooking occurs and go against the fly fishing only ethos of our club.
