November Events @ Needham Sportsman's Club

Tuesday 12th November

Thursday 21st November

November Fly Tying Night

This months flies have been grouped together as the "Easy Three". The emphasis will be on the use of common materials and tying methods. Tyers will be encouraged to go away and practice the damsel nymph and bring back their best two or three flies to the December fly tying meeting. For some friendly competition, a small prize will be offered to the best damsel as judged by the group.

The full tying materials list and pictorial tying instructions can be found on the Fly Tying page of the club website.

November Meeting & Annual NSC Raffle/Auction

The November meeting is all about fun and fund raising. Please bring quality fishing items for the donation table. The night with start with a dinner of pulled pork sandwiches and sides at 6:30pm followed by a short meeting to cover club business before moving on to the raffle/auction. This event relies on member participation and generosity and has been very successful in the past. It would be great to see lots of old and new members turn up to enjoy this popular annual event.

Catch Report and Pond Conditions

Trout are being caught all around the pond but at times they are making anglers work for their catch. As expected, there is little rhyme or reason to fly choice but something bright and moving from your fly box seems to be a good bet for the new stockies. Out back some of the "holdovers" are falling to smaller flies.

'Most' members are happy to share their hot fly choice so don't be shy if you are a new member, introduce yourself and share in the fun of the catch.

  • Dave H caught multiple fish on one of the flies that the tying group worked on in the spring.

  • Phil B picked out a few of the new fish from the deeper water out front with a small green/white streamer fish very slow.

  • Bob L continues to catch fish using his full arsenal of flies.

  • Chris R had a good spell of luck with a muddle minnow fish high in the water.

Bright streamers moved fast, small flies under indictors, dark streamer patterns fished deep from the far-side platforms and drowned elk hair caddis out back amongst the leaves have all caught fish this week. Floating lines and sink tips are both effective. The trout are there, as are the leaves and pine needles, so be patient and make the most of this fall stretch of pleasant weather. There has been some great banter and camaraderie around the pond and clubhouse this fall so make the most of it. If the fishing is slow, light a fire in the clubhouse and enjoy the peace and slow pace of our little haven in amongst the chaos of the MetroWest.

NSC - The most (unofficially) inclusive fishing club in the Universe

As we all know, Needham Sportsman's Club is a fully inclusive club. This Halloween afternoon this was never more evident than when half-vulcan/half human* Dr Spock put together his 5wt rod and took a few casts before heading home to help his grandkids trick or treat around Needham.

Fun Fact - Dr Spock's Earthing cousin, Mike Herman, was the first member to catch a trout on Opening Day but Mikey was not in the "First Fish Pool" so could not collect the honor.
